Nicola Garrard’s (NC 1997) new novel 21 MILES, the sequel to 29 LOCKS (HopeRoad, 2021) is published on 28 September 2023. 21 MILEs revisits the protagonist of 29 LOCKS, teenager Donny. Older, wiser and more confident, life is going well for the former gang member. But when Donny and his best friend Zoe plan a day trip to France ahead of their sixth form exams, Donny loses his passport and is arrested as an ‘illegal’ migrant.
Nicola’s previous book was shortlisted for the Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize and the Mslexia Children’s Novel competition. She lives in West Sussex and works for the charity Minority Matters, which provides educational support to children from BAME communities.
