Guild of Friends

Newnham is very lucky to be supported by the Guild of Friends. Membership of the Guild is now closed but it occupies a special place at the heart of the Friends Group and donations to the Guild of Friends are welcome.

The Guild of Friends aims to actively support the life of the College targeting a wide spectrum of specific needs,  having available to us unrestricted funds which if necessary can be deployed at very short notice.

Each year we award 5 College prizes of £150 and a £500 travel grant.  Other recent grants include support for TEDx Newnham, a substantial donation towards the landscaping of the new Philippa Fawcett courtyard, the conservation of the stunning Herringham textile to be displayed in College, support for the MCR garden party, for various JCR projects, for the student creative writing society, for three postgraduates to attend conferences, and we pay for the podcasts of the Family Forum events.  We also have a hardship fund, administered by the Financial Tutor, which enables a bursary to be given to a first year student.

The Guild of Friends is not a separate charity but is registered with HMRC to recover Gift Aid.  Donations and subscriptions are not paid to general College funds but to the separate Guild of Friends account.

For more details as to how to make a donation or other queries please contact the Secretary, Sidney Syson.
