Carpenter/Joiner with general maintenance skills
About the role
Newnham College is seeking to recruit a full time, permanent CARPENTER/JOINER to join the Maintenance team. Working under the direction of the Buildings Manager, the successful applicant will provide efficient and professional expertise in carpentry and joinery and offer general maintenance skills. Experienced in the use of workshop equipment, including a spindle moulder, tenoner and morticer they will be expected to work to a very high standard within current health and safety regulations and work with particular sensitivity bearing in mind the historical, and in some cases listed, nature of some of the College buildings. The College, established in 1871, has many beautiful buildings, old and new, and there is an ever-present need for professional trades people to keep them functioning safely and in good order. This post is instrumental in providing that service; the work is varied and interesting and is undertaken in a positive and supportive working environment.
This is a permanent, full time post, working 37.5 hours a week. The post is paid at point 37 on the University’s single salary spine, currently £33,951 per annum. Flexibility is required as the post includes periodic “on call” duty as part of a rota shared with the rest of the team, to respond to out of hours emergencies. This attracts separate remuneration. This post is pensionable under the College’s attractive contributory pension scheme, with an employer contribution rate of 14.5%, holiday entitlement is to 33 days per year (inclusive of bank holidays), a free meal when on duty, free car parking and free use of the College’s gym facilities.
About you
The successful applicant will possess a recognised qualification or equivalent in carpentry and or joinery or have equivalent experience and also be able and willing to contribute to the team with some general maintenance skills. Good communication skills, flexibility, a willingness contribute to and work as part of a successful maintenance team are all key attributes.
