Disability

The College and University are committed to providing appropriate support for students with disabilities.

All students are strongly encouraged to disclose any disability before arriving in Cambridge. This disclosure allows the College to make reasonable adjustments for the needs that arise from a disability.

The College works closely with the University’s Accessibility & Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) to ensure that students have what they need to take full advantage of their time at university, so it is important that you liaise with them, and us if appropriate, to make sure that any special requirements can be met. The ADRC may be able to provide specialist support or mentoring for you. The link below will take you to an online form from the ADRC which you should complete before coming into residence, or as soon as possible after you come into residence, in order for your needs to be assessed. You may be provided with a Student Support Document (SSD) outlining your reasonable adjustments. If you are entitled to extra time in exams at school, this will be the case at University too, including in any admissions tests.

Giving the College and your Department permission to view your Student Support Document (if you are issued with one) will alert us to any special provision the College and Department might reasonably provide to support you during your course. Remember: a disability does not affect the requirement to achieve specific academic standards or to follow the University course or abide by University and College rules. Every Tripos has competence standards which all students must meet, including those with disabilities.

Newnham has some accessible student rooms, particularly in the new Dorothy Garrod Building, and lifts serve some parts of the College (Dorothy Garrod Building, Clough Hall). If you have mobility concerns, please get in touch with the UG Admissions Office to arrange an individual visit to have a look around.

We are able to offer some financial assistance to those with mobility problems (either temporary or otherwise) on production of receipts for taxi fares etc; please contact the Financial Tutor for information about how to apply. Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) can be helpful in meeting additional costs.

For further details of facilities and access at Newnham, the other Cambridge Colleges and University buildings, please see the Accessibility & Disability Resource Centre guide.
