Commemoration Weekend 2023 Report

We celebrated Commemoration Weekend this year with alumnae who matriculated in 1953, 1963, 1973, 1998 and 2013.  The Right Honourable Diane Abbott, who matriculated in 1973, spoke at the Dinner in Clough Hall.  It was great to see so many Newnhamites in person rather than on Zoom or Teams and the atmosphere in College on this beautiful spring weekend was buzzing.

Dr Rebecca Dell gave the annual Roll Commemoration Lecture on using satellite imagery to map the surface meltwater on Antarctic ice shelves.  Dr Dell studied geography at Durham, before completing her MPhil at Newcastle and her PhD at the Scott Polar Research Institute. Her current postdoc ‘Controls on Lake Formation on Ice Shelves’ is funded by the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative Fellowship Scheme.

Alumnae were also treated to tours of Newnham gardens by Gardeners Alicia Fordham and new Head Gardener Paul Anderson, the Dorothy Garrod building with our Domestic Bursar Wendy Evans and a tour of Newnham art by curator Laura Dennis.  Many thanks to Wendy Evans for the above photographs.
