Biography

Sara Gaines has the varied role of Communications Director for Newnham with particular responsibility for research communications and website development. She works Monday to Wednesday, with her job share partner Piper Terrett working Wednesday to Friday.

Newnham’s Communications Office is about college communications in its broadest sense. Yes, we’re creating engaging alumnae publications, running social media, and overseeing the website. Most crucially, we are here to help people within College communicate – with each other and the outside world. That may mean working with students and staff to ensure that routine information and procedures are clear. It may mean working with an academic to manage unexpected media attention or help them prepare for a major interview about their research. We balance long-term project management with the unexpected requests that come in every day.

Sara joined the College with 10 years’ experience in communications for a wide range of education charities, community organisations and technology companies. She is also freelance Communications Manager for BFSS, an education charity which supports and funds inclusive education projects; and previously created a digital knowledge exchange programme for headteachers across the country to share excellent practice.

She began her career as a journalist in Cardiff and worked for The Guardian for nine years. Outside work she enjoys swimming, and spending time with family and friends.
