Biography

Dr Pam Hirsch was a teacher for some years  before becoming an academic in the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge. There she lectured on English and American Literature, on Film History and Theory and also on the history of the women’s  movement, including their influence on the education of girls and women. She was involved in setting up and supervising on the interdisciplinary MPhil in Screen Media Cultures from its launch in 2006. She is a biographer, attracted most often to women who were engaged on the liberal left, and were creative, too (writers, dancers, artists). She has written full-scale biographies of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon and Phyllis Bottome as well as entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Research Interests

Since retirement and moving to London Dr Pam Hirsch has largely put her academic energy into reviewing the books of other people, but is just starting research on another biography.  Recent publications include The Cinema of the Swimming Pool and London on Film.
