Biography
Dr. Madeline Woker is a historian of modern France, French colonialism, and taxation and currently a Lecturer in the History of France and the Francophone World in the Faculty of History and a research associate at the Centre for History and Economics. She previously taught at Brown and Columbia.
She obtained her PhD from Columbia University in 2020, where her dissertation was awarded the Clough Prize for the best dissertation in European history. She also holds an MPhil in Modern European History from the University of Cambridge and a dual MA degree in European affairs from LSE and Sciences Po Paris.
Research Interests
Dr. Woker’s research interests lie at the intersection of the history of empires and colonialism, the history of economic life and political history. She is currently writing a book about the politics of taxation and inequality in the French colonial empire between 1900 and the 1950s.
