Biography
Dr Liam Saddington studied Geography at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford before moving to St Cross College, University of Oxford for his MSc in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance. Liam then returned to St Catherine’s College to complete his DPhil in Geography and the Environment focusing on the geopolitics of climate change in the South Pacific. Liam then became the Course Director of the Nature, Society and Environmental Governance MSc at the University of Oxford and a lecturer at Jesus College. He was awarded an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Oxford. Liam took up a position as a Teaching Associate in Human Geography at the University of Cambridge in 2022. He has twice been a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of the South Pacific.
Research Interests
Dr Liam Saddington is a political and environmental geographer. He has three primary research interests. Firstly, Liam is interested in the intersection of climate change, geopolitics and small island states focusing on low-lying islands at risk of inundation. He has considered the wider implications for geopolitics and governance in the Pacific and the intersections of environmental degradation and colonialism. Secondly, Liam is interested in geography education, simulations and political geography. He has worked to develop educational materials for primary and secondary pupils and has written on how young people conceive of geopolitics. Thirdly, Liam has undertaken participatory research with geography teachers focusing on young people’s perceptions of climate justice.
