Biography
Dr Anna Christie studied for a joint degree in Law with Accounting and Finance at the University of Aberdeen and graduated top of her class with starred First Class Honours. Following her undergraduate studies, she pursued an LLM in Law at Harvard Law School, winning the Saint Andrew’s Society of New York Scholarship to fund her studies in the US. Dr Christie then attended Balliol College, University of Oxford and graduated with a BCL in Law with Distinction. After many years working in legal practice and in industry, Dr Christie earned an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business and a PhD in Law at Trinity College, University of Cambridge.
After triple-qualifying as a lawyer in New York, England & Wales and Scotland, Dr Christie spent almost a decade in legal practice. She began her professional career as an Associate in the energy and climate change department of the international law firm CMS and later worked as a Senior Associate in cross-border mergers and acquisitions at the US law firm Skadden. Dr Christie also spent several years working in-house at a global FTSE 100 energy company as Chief of Staff to the CEO and Senior Legal Counsel. In this dual role, she worked in the US, the UK, Australia, and Singapore, and was responsible for leading an initiative to launch a renewable energy division of the company.
Dr Christie is Director of Studies in Law at Newnham College, having worked at the College since 2017 in various roles. She is also a Lecturer in Law and Finance at the University of Oxford Faculty of Law, where she teaches on the MLF, BCL and MJur programmes. Dr Christie is also a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge Centre for Business Research and a Visiting Fellow at the LawFin Center (Center for Advanced Studies on the Foundations of Law and Finance) at Goethe University, Frankfurt.
Research Interests
Dr Christie has broad research interests in comparative corporate governance and law and finance. Her current research primarily focuses on sustainable corporate governance, environmental and social investing, and shareholder activism. This involves examining what role companies, shareholders, and other stakeholders play in the climate crisis and other environmental and social issues. Dr Christie’s work is interdisciplinary in nature, combining legal scholarship with economic and financial analysis. She utilises empirical research methods and data science techniques to examine the impact of laws in practice and to inform policy choices.
Dr Christie’s academic research has been published in a variety of leading journals in the US, the UK, and Europe, including the University of California Davis Law Review, the Cambridge Law Journal, the Journal of Corporate Law Studies, and the European Business Organization Law Review. She is also a contributor to the Oxford Business Law Blog and the Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog.
