Biography

Dr Alexander Bryan is an Isaac Newton Trust Career Development Fellow in the Faculty of Philosophy, a Director of Studies at Newnham, and a Fellow and Director of Studies at Magdalene College. He received BA and MA degrees from the University of York and his PhD from King’s College London. Since then, he has held postdoctoral fellowships at Tel Aviv University and Harvard University, and worked as a Lecturer at Cardiff University.

Research Interests

Alexander is a political philosopher whose research engages with questions of economic justice, theories of freedom, and democratic theory. He is especially interested in exploring how individual freedom is promoted or undermined in particular economic conditions or relationships. He has published papers on these topic in journals such as The Journal of Political Philosophy, American Political Science Review, and Ethical Theory & Moral Practice. His current research explores the philosophical implications of conceiving of states as group agents.
