Rashalee Mitchell starts her Margaret Anstee Centre Visiting Fellowship

Margaret Anstee Centre Visiting Bye-Fellow Rashalee Mitchell has begun her Fellowship by presenting papers at two recent conferences. Firstly Ms. Mitchell presented her paper on Examining Sex Workers’ Exclusion from the Jamaican Policy Environment: Towards Inclusion and Development at the 4th Annual Caribbean Sociological Association conference: Decolonizing Development for Sustainable and Just Global Community, which was held in Jamaica, at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, in September.

This conference brought together primarily academics, students, teachers and other interested stakeholders in the Caribbean region, who teach, conduct research, learn and are interested in the discipline of sociology specifically and more broadly into social issues. Ms. Mitchell is also a member of the Caribbean Sociological Association (CASA) and has served on the executive committee for the past three years, first serving as Secretary and then as Treasurer. She was recently re-elected to the same position for the 2024/25 term.

Ms. Mitchell also presented a paper titled: (Re)designing a relevant education, labour and socio-economic policy framework for the changing times at the Africa in Transition: Locating the Place and Space of Global Africa and the World conference, which was held in Accra, Ghana in October.

The conference brought together academics, change-makers, business leaders and other key stakeholders to examine topics and challenges affecting the continent in transformative ways, including education, entrepreneurship and the role of African countries on the global stage. Ms. Mitchell is based at the University of the West Indies where she is Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work which is located in the faculty of Social Sciences. The majority of her Fellowship will be conducted remotely, with an in-person visit to Newnham College planned for the Easter Term in 2025.
