Newnham student Freya wins Sports Person of the Year award
Newnham College is delighted to celebrate the achievements of undergraduate Freya Moody, who has been been named Sports Person of the Year 2026 at the University of Cambridge Sports Awards.
The annual awards, held during Easter Term, recognise exceptional sporting accomplishment across the University over the past year. Freya’s win reflects an outstanding season both on and off the field.
As captain of the Cambridge University Women’s Lacrosse Club (CUWLC), Freya has demonstrated remarkable leadership and commitment. She led the Blues to the BUCS national quarter-finals and scored more than 60 goals in just 10 matches. Alongside her playing success, she has supported the club by coaching both University teams, stepping in to umpire matches when needed, and organising training sessions, fitness programmes, and team activities. She has also worked to strengthen connections between squads, helping to build a more unified club environment.
Freya’s achievements extend beyond the University. At just 19, she earned her first senior cap for Great Britain, competing internationally against the Netherlands and Germany as the youngest member of the squad. She has balanced these commitments with the demands of a Biological Natural Sciences degree, maintaining an exceptional level of dedication throughout.
In addition, Freya has contributed to the success of Centaurs Lacrosse Club, helping them secure the title of European Champions. She is equally committed to developing the next generation of players, regularly coaching at camps and in one-to-one sessions, where her enthusiasm and encouragement continue to inspire others.
Well done Freya. It is a fitting recognition of Freya’s talent, leadership and generosity, and the College congratulates her on this well-deserved honour.
