Jacqueline Morgan installed as Principal

Today Professor Jacqueline Morgan begins her role as Principal of Newnham College, University of Cambridge. 

Born in Glasgow, Professor Morgan was the first in her family to attend university. She studied at the University of Glasgow before a doctorate at the University of Oxford. Her appointment as Principal represents a return to Newnham, where she was formerly a Director of Studies and College Teaching Officer in English. 

"I am delighted to return to Newnham, where I began my Cambridge career, as I have so many good memories of my time here and the inspiring women I met. I look forward to working with the fellowship, staff, and students, drawing on my academic experience to champion this exceptional community of women," she said. 

For the past decade, Professor Morgan has served as Senior Tutor of Clare College, Cambridge, leading on student support, bursary provision, and educational assessment, while chairing numerous University committees. She is on secondment from her role as Professor of Medieval English and Scots in the Faculty of English, and is widely recognised for her scholarship on Chaucer and the literature of the later Middle Ages. 

Founded in 1871, Newnham is a college with a proud pioneering history. As the oldest college run by women, for women, the Newnham College community has spent 155 years fostering intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and a commitment to positive change.
