The Family Forum

The Family Forum took place on 31 January focused on the theme Family Matrescence and Motherhood: what it means to be a mother in the 21st century. Newnham has a proud history of discussing contemporary issues affecting families and mothers in particular. Every year we host a forum where everyone can explore complex topics and learn from experts in specific fields as well as from each other. We encourage an atmosphere of inclusivity, and welcome alumnae and their guests to join us.

Co-organiser of the event Josephine Holt (NC 2012) writes:

On 31 January I was thrilled to chair the annual Newnham Family Forum. This unique event is an opportunity to discuss contemporary issues affecting families, in particular mothers. Our topic this year was Matrescence and Motherhood: what it means to be a mother in the 21st Century.

We heard from five diverse speakers: Professor Charlotte Faircloth, Dr Sarah-Lloyd Fox, Eleanor Cramer, Dr Terri Apter and Professor Claire Hughes. They discussed the subject from all angles including returning to work after having a child, the mental health challenges of the perinatal period and how being a mother is impacted by a child starting school.

Lunch was followed by a lively debate and the opportunity for attendees to ask questions of their own.

We would be thrilled to see you at next year's Family Forum. If you would like to suggest any topics we could explore please do get in touch through College.

A special thank you to Ruth Shin (NC 2007) and Josephine Holt (NC 2012) for all of their hard work in bringing the forum to life.
