Copy of historic suffragist book acquired by library
College is delighted to have acquired a copy of Great Suffragists and Why contributed to by Madam Sarah Grand... et al. (edited by Ethel Hill and Mrs. Olga Fenton Shafer 1909) thanks to the generous support from Diane Seymour-Williams (Wilson, NC 1978) and Angela Jennings (Wilson, NC 1976).
It is an excellent addition to Newnham's collection. Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, one of the founders of Newnham, is the second entry in the book as well as being a contributor to the volume, which also features her sister Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Ethel Hill's introduction lists supporters of the suffragists including former Principal Eleanor Sidgwick and Clementina Black, sister of the translator Constance Garnett (NC 1879), and quotes from an article that Millicent Garrett Fawcett wrote on the occasion of a suffrage march in 1908, when Newnham and Girton alumnae carried the "Better is wisdom than weapons of war" banner. The banner is now on display at Newnham.
