Pudding Seminar: Emma Perkins and Sasha Gardner, ''The Creation of the Universe': Robert Fludd, Cosmology, and Newnham's Floud Memorial textile'
The subject of this Seminar is an item from Newnham’s collections: ‘The Creation of the Universe’ is a textile wall hanging now on display in the College Library. Photographic details from the textile are also on display in the Library corridor. The textile, which has recently undergone conservation, was commissioned by the Newnham Roll in honour of College Principal Jean Floud and produced between 1982 and 1995.
The first speaker, Sasha Gardner, Early Career Librarian at Newnham, will present a biography of Patricia Jaffé who made the textile. Newnham Fellow Dr Emma Perkins, a historian specialising in the early modern history of science, will then introduce ‘Utrisque cosmi’, the 17th-century cosmological text that inspired the textile’s design.

All staff, students, and senior members are very warmly invited to attend the Pudding Seminars. Talks usually last between 20-25 minutes, followed by time for questions, comments and discussion before we finish at 1.50pm, to allow people to get to 2pm appointments. Please note that coffee and cake will be available from 1 o'clock with the seminar starting promptly at 1.15pm.
