Newnham College established a lecture series devoted to The Public Understanding of Mathematics and Science, in memory of Gillian Vaisey, who was a Research Fellow in Mathematics at Newnham. This lecture series alternates with our Henry Sidgwick and Jane Harrison Memorial Lectures, as the most prestigious of the College’s annual events within the University.
The Gillian Vaisey series was inaugurated in 2013 by Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, who spoke about “The Highs and Lows of Communicating Statistics with the Public”. In 2017, Dr Eugenia Cheng’s topic was “How to bake Pi: Making Abstract Mathematics Palatable.” In 2022, Professor Julia Gog spoke about “Using Mathematics to Understand Pandemic Strategies”
